Remembrance Day: the lumberjills of Scotland

Shared some stories of the wartime 'lumberjills' in the strath at the weekend. The Women's Timber Corps were women from all over Scotland - mostly big cities like Glasgow - who travelled to the rural Highlands to fell trees during the Second World War.

There were many lumberjill camps across the strath; none are mapped and recorded (though one site is waiting to be uploaded to the historic environment record!)

Their work is not visible in the landscape, and it was only in 2007 that a statue was unveiled to commemorate their efforts, in Aberfeldy in Perthshire.
And the white poppy remembers all who lost their lives, and hopes for a different future.

What our customers think...

This was a fabulous way to spend a morning in the Highlands. Sarah brings the landscape to life with natural history, folklore, and a deep sense of connectedness with the landscape and environment. Great for the whole family - our kids were enthralled with the fairy stories as much as we we excited to learn about the history and geography of the area.
